READ THE DOCUMENT, SEE THE STRUCTURE

What is an MD viewer?

An MD viewer is a tool that turns Markdown text into a readable document. A file ending in .md usually contains ordinary text with simple formatting marks: hash signs for headings, asterisks for emphasis, and brackets for links. The viewer interprets those marks so you can read the structure without mentally translating the source.

People use one to check a README, review meeting notes, follow a tutorial, or read documentation sent by a colleague. A Markdown preview makes tables, lists, quotations, and code easier to scan while keeping the original text available.

GetMDView brings that reading workflow into your browser without installing another app. Open a local file or paste a passage, then switch between source and preview as needed. You can make small edits, copy the rendered HTML, or export a standalone page. Opening a document here does not change the original file or create a public sharing link.

THE MARKS BEHIND THE PAGE

Supported Markdown syntax

From a simple note
to a structured README.

Markdown documents can use different dialects. GetMDView supports the familiar building blocks below, including common GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) features. Footnotes are supported as an additional extension. The syntax column shows source fragments you can try in the editor; a complete table also needs a separator row such as | --- | --- |.

Markdown features available in GetMDView
FeatureSource exampleWhat you get
Headings and emphasis# Heading, **bold**, *italic*Read headings at their original levels, with anchors for navigation, plus bold and italic text.
Lists and quotations- Item, 1. Item, > QuoteFollow ordered or unordered steps, nested lists, and quoted passages without reading the punctuation.
Tables · GFM| Name | Value |Preview pipe-delimited tables with a header, separator row, and readable body cells.
Task lists · GFM- [ ] To do, - [x] DoneSee checked and unchecked tasks. Edit their markers in the source to change their state.
Strikethrough · GFM~~Removed text~~Show deleted wording while keeping it visible for context, revisions, or completed work.
Automatic links · GFMhttps://example.comTurn recognized web addresses into clickable links without writing a separate link label.
Code blocks```javascriptKeep indentation and line breaks in fenced code; supported language names enable syntax highlighting.
Links and images[Label](url), ![Alt text](url)Display named links and images. Remote images may contact their hosts when the preview loads.
Footnotes · extensionA note[^1] and [^1]: DetailsPlace supporting information at the end of a document, with links between references and notes.

For code highlighting, add a language name after the opening backticks. JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, JSON, Bash, HTML/XML, and CSS are available. Unrecognized languages and very large code blocks still appear as readable code, without coloring. A preview displays code; it does not run it.

GitHub-specific features are not all part of Markdown itself. Mermaid diagrams and mathematical notation are not rendered here, and a bare relative image path may not resolve because opening one file does not give the website access to its neighboring folders. Use a reachable image URL when appropriate. Embedded HTML is sanitized, so scripts and unsafe attributes are removed.

ONE FILE, ANY SCREEN

Open .md files on Windows, macOS, and mobile

Use the file picker
already in your browser.

A .md file is a text document, so you do not need to convert it before reading it here. GetMDView also accepts .markdown, .mdown, and .txt files. If a document arrived in an archive, extract it first; if it arrived as an email attachment, save it where your browser can select it.

Windows

Open this page in your browser, choose Open file, and select the document from Downloads or another folder. You can also drag it from File Explorer onto the page. This gives you an md file viewer without changing which desktop app opens .md files by default.

Use Source to inspect the original text, Preview to read the formatted result, or Split to compare both. If you edit the source, the file on disk stays unchanged. Copy the text back to your usual editor when you want to save those changes as Markdown.

macOS

Select Open file and choose a document, or drag a .md file from Finder into the browser window. A Markdown file from a notes app or code repository can be read directly once it is available on your Mac. You do not need a browser extension or a separate conversion step.

For a copy that opens as a formatted web page, use Download HTML. For a document to print or send, choose Print / PDF and use the browser’s PDF destination. These actions create separate outputs and do not overwrite the source file you selected.

iPhone, iPad, and Android

Tap Open file and browse to your saved document. On iPhone or iPad, downloads are usually available through the Files app; on Android, look in Downloads or your device’s file manager. The exact picker depends on your browser and device. A cloud-stored file may need to download before it can be read.

The preview opens first on smaller screens. Switch to Source when you want to paste or change text, then return to Preview for reading. If the picker does not expose the file, copy its text from another app and paste it instead. Clipboard and PDF options vary by browser, so HTML download is another way to keep the rendered result.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT WORKFLOW

MD viewer vs Markdown editor

The difference is mostly about the job you want to finish. A viewer helps you read a document or check its appearance. An editor helps you create and maintain the source over time. Many tools combine both, so the useful question is whether you need a quick view or a workspace for ongoing writing.

For reading and checking
Choose a viewer when someone sends you notes, you want to inspect a README, or you need to confirm that a table or code block renders correctly.
For ongoing writing
Choose an editor when your work depends on project folders, direct file saving, search across documents, version control, or other authoring features.

GetMDView includes a plain text editing pane, so you can fix a list marker, test a heading, or adjust a link while watching the Markdown preview. It does not manage a workspace or automatically write edits back to disk. Local storage remembers the latest text in this browser, but it is not a file backup or a sync service.

For longer work, keep the original Markdown in your preferred editor and use this page to check a passage or prepare HTML. When sharing results, send the exported file or the Markdown itself. Sharing the GetMDView website address alone does not share the text in your editor.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

FAQ

Do I need to upload my file?

No. GetMDView reads files locally in your browser. Your Markdown is never uploaded to our servers, and you do not need an account. Images linked in a document may be loaded from their original websites.

Which file formats can I open?

Open .md, .markdown, .mdown and .txt files, or paste Markdown directly into the editor. Tables, task lists, strikethrough, automatic links, footnotes and fenced code blocks are supported.

How do I export Markdown to PDF?

Use Print / PDF in the preview toolbar, then choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog. Only the rendered document is printed. You can also download HTML and print it later.

Where is my content stored?

Your latest Markdown and theme preference are stored in this browser’s local storage. They are not synced to other devices. Use Clear to remove your saved text. Private browsing or clearing browser data may remove it too.

What is the difference between an MD viewer and a Markdown editor?

An MD viewer focuses on reading a formatted document; a Markdown editor focuses on writing and managing its source. The two can overlap. GetMDView lets you edit text and see the result immediately, but it does not manage project folders, sync files, or write changes back to your original .md file. Use it for quick checks and previews, and keep a dedicated editor for longer writing projects.
